Ria Barrenechea is an artist and tattooer born in Surrey, England. She now makes her home in a rural coastal village in Scotland, working from a private studio in Glasgow.
Tattooing since 2011, Ria has been dedicated throughout her life in making time to create art, using a variety of traditional mediums, since early childhood.
Predominantly self-taught, she is deeply passionate about creating custom, one of a kind tattoos. Preferring to avoid digital mediums, she instead hand-draws each design with careful consideration to complement each body harmoniously.
Drawing inspiration from nature, such as birds, mammals, insects, the botanical world and pets, her work focuses on capturing the unique beauty and intricacies of each subject. She is also influenced by the muted colour palettes of the Art Nouveau movement, as well as vintage lithograph prints and natural history books.
In 2022, Ria was approached by a curator at The Burrell Museum in Glasgow to be featured in a short film and interview for a digital exhibition displayed alongside tattooed artifacts of Ancient Egyptian women.
